Hiring a car at Drogheda

Whether you are passing through on your way north or south, or settling in for a few days, Drogheda is a natural base for the north-east of Ireland. Enterprise offers car hire and van hire in Drogheda, giving you the freedom to move at your own speed from the moment you arrive.

Drogheda sits on the banks of the River Boyne in County Louth, halfway between Dublin and the border with Northern Ireland. It is a working town with a long history, and that history is still visible. St Laurence Gate, one of the best-preserved medieval gateways in Ireland, stands right in the town centre. Millmount Fort overlooks the river from the south, housing a museum that traces the area's past from prehistoric times through to the modern era. Beyond the town, the landscape opens out into the Boyne Valley, one of the most significant historic landscapes in Europe.

A hire car makes a real difference here. The Boyne Valley is dotted with sites spread across Counties Meath and Louth, and most of them are difficult to reach without your own transport. Newgrange, Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey are all within a short drive of Drogheda but poorly served by public transport. A car also puts Dublin, Dundalk and Belfast within comfortable reach for day trips or onward travel. If you need a larger or more comfortable vehicle, an SUV or 7-seater people carrier works well for family trips through this part of Ireland.

Van hire in Drogheda suits a range of practical needs. Groups travelling together, families moving between accommodation, or tradespeople working across the region will all find a small van or large van useful. The area sits on the M1 corridor, so getting goods or people between Drogheda and the surrounding towns is straightforward. If you are relocating or moving between properties in the north-east, a Luton van gives you the load space to do it in one trip.

Nearby attractions

The Brú na Bóinne complex, which includes Newgrange and Knowth, is the obvious starting point for anyone visiting the area. These Neolithic passage tombs predate the Pyramids of Giza and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Book tickets well in advance, especially between spring and autumn.

Monasterboice is a quieter stop, but worth the short drive. The ruins of this early Christian settlement include a well-preserved round tower and some of the finest carved high crosses in Ireland. The detail on the tenth-century crosses is remarkable considering their age.

Old Mellifont Abbey, Ireland's first Cistercian monastery, stands a few kilometres beyond Monasterboice. The surviving stonework gives a clear sense of just how substantial the complex once was. A visitor centre on site puts the monastery's history in context, and the surrounding grounds are pleasant to walk.

The Boyne Valley sits between the coast and the Irish midlands, and Drogheda is at its eastern edge. It is an area where a short drive in almost any direction turns up something worth stopping for, and having your own vehicle is the only practical way to take that in properly.

Damage Waiver (DW) reduces the liability of the renter in the event of damage or theft of the vehicle. If DW is not included in the reservation, the renter has full liability for the vehicle. DW is available for purchase and reduces the applicable excess. If included in the reservation, the excess amount for each incident of damage is 2000 EUR for manual Mini and Economy cars. For all other cars and vans, an excess of 2700 EUR applies. For premium and luxury vehicles an excess of 3000 EUR applies. Before purchasing DW it is advised to determine, if a personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If DW is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges and seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. DW is not insurance.

Renters wishing to discuss or dispute any matters concerning damage to the rental vehicle may contact our damage recovery department. Please email damageclaim@em.com or call 00 353 1 800 812 781.

All hires where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it is collected from (whether scheduled or unscheduled) will be subject to a one-way fee. The one-way fee varies based on car category, location and pick-up date. If you have reserved a one-way hire, this fee is listed in the reservation details and/or the summary. If unscheduled, this fee will be listed on your hire invoice.

Excess Protection (EP) is an optional coverage available either:

(i) Where you have also purchased DW from us, in which case, your responsibility for any loss caused by damage to, theft or loss of the Vehicle is further reduced to the excess amount indicated on the Summary, or

(ii) If you purchase EP, but not DW, you remain liable for all losses above the amount indicated on the Summary up to the full market value of the Vehicle, every time the Vehicle is damaged or stolen or lost.

Excess Protection reduces the liability on the vehicle to the following; 100 EUR for economy and mini vehicles, 500 EUR for premium, luxury vehicles and Luton vans, and 250 EUR for all other vehicles.

You may wish to check if your personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If you decline Excess Protection then you are required to pay any applicable Damage Waiver excess and seek compensation from your carrier. Excess Protection is not insurance.

If the renter does not choose to purchase an optional fuel product at the start of the rental period and does not return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as at the start of the rental period (as indicated on the Rental Agreement) the renter will be required to pay a refuelling service fee calculated as the difference between the fuel level recorded on the Rental Agreement and that recorded upon the return of the vehicle multiplied by the fuel price displayed at the branch, plus a refuelling charge of 15 EUR. Unused or excess fuel will not be refunded.

Where the vehicle is an electric vehicle and is returned with less charge than was provided at the start of the Rental Period (such level as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary), a re-charging fee calculated as the kWhs needed to charge the vehicle to make up the difference between the charge level recorded on the Rental Agreement Summary and that recorded upon the return of the Vehicle multiplied by the kWh price displayed on the Rental Agreement Summary plus, an additional charge as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary. No unused or excess charge will be refunded.

Roadside Assistance Protection (RAP) is an optional product to waive the renter's responsibility for the following: tyre (including the rim) repair or replacement (unless part of a larger repair to the vehicle), replacement key costs, glass repair or glass replacement costs (except when part of a larger repair) and all recovery and call out charges imposed by our chosen roadside assistance providers as a result of a fault occurring to the vehicle due to the renter's error. All drivers must present a fully valid and unexpired driving licence (digital licences are not accepted).
Unless the driving licence has been issued by the UK or a Member State of the European Union (in standard format):
•If the licence is in a language other than that of the country in which you are hiring, and the alphabet used is an extended Latin-based alphabet, an International Driving Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes, in addition to the home country licence.

•Customers may not hire a vehicle solely with the International Driving Permit.  The International Driving Permit is an official translation of the individual's home country licence and is not considered a licence, nor is it considered valid identification.

All renters must provide a valid photo ID such as a driving licence, passport or ID card. Visitors to Ireland must also provide proof of return travel and accommodation information while in Ireland.

Please note that we reserve the right to request additional ID or conduct further identification checks if needed, which may include an identity check with an external organisation.

If Third Party Liability is included in your reservation, you and additional authorised drivers will be provided cover by our motor fleet insurance policy  (subject to all terms, conditions, limitations, exceptions and exclusions of such policy) that meets or exceeds the minimum required third party liability insurance against death, personal injury and damage to property. Third Party Liability is subject to compliance with all terms, conditions, limitations, exceptions and exclusions, under rental entities insurance policy.
